Jesus – please leave town!

Jesus can be bad for business.  When Jesus arrived at the country of the Gergesenes, He met two demon possessed men who were triggered by His Presence; “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”  (Matthew 8:29)  In fear of Jesus they asked Him; “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” (v. 31)  Jesus did; “And He said to them, ‘Go.’ So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.”  (v. 32) pigs-2

The nearby town heard of this miracle and asked Him to leave; “And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.” (v. 34)  Jesus can be bad for business and wreck  the economy!  It’s easy today to shake our heads and be disgusted by those town people.  Imagine, asking Jesus to leave just because He delivered two demon possessed men and indirectly caused a herd of pigs to die.  We have done the same.  We have kicked Jesus out of our schools and libraries, preferring drag queens.  We have kicked Jesus out of our towns preferring instead rainbow crosswalks and flags.  We have kicked Jesus out of our government preferring instead inclusion and equity in our leaders.  We have kicked Jesus out of our hearts because we just want to be happy, being holy is for hypocrites.

John Wesley said of these town folk; “They besought him to depart out of their coasts – They loved their swine so much better than their souls! How many are of the same mind!”  In Canada, we can proudly say – We are!
